Drinks
There are drink machines everywhere: In train stations, neighborhoods, main streets, shopping districts, and yes, even in back alleys.
You'll find coffee shots, tea, juice, water, and the occasional Coke Zero for sale, priced at 80-120 Yen. At the time of this writing, there was a bit of a price war going on, and all the prices were being reduced as a result.
Note that some drinks are served hot (the smaller Jasmine tea, for example).
There are some machines that sell alcoholic beverages .. but these were not common.
As far as drinking and walking are concerned, you won't find that to be common at all. Drinking a water, tea, or beer while on the go is something that we did not see at all during our trip.
