This cafe closed in 1996 or '97 after a good long run of over 25 years. That marked the end of an era in the West Bank/U of M neighborhood in Minneapolis, which was once the center of the local '60s and '70s counterculture. By the '90s, the University population had turned more conservative, the area had become the city's Somalian neighborhoo d, the old hippies had mostly moved on, and the Riv could no longer make ends meet. Too bad for me, because they offered the too-rare vegetarian cuisine which could sustain me for five or six hours instead of leaving me hungry after an hour or two. (sigh) It was great while it lasted. - duncan, 09/04/2005
Home Grown Food and Organic Music! Or was it Organic Food and Home Grown Music? Jerry Carlton Collective member 1970-71 - Howdy, 10/21/2010
It was a very sad day for me, and my parents the day when we drove by the riv and saw the crude cardboard signs in the windows saying "closed"... I myself was only 15 when the riv closed its doors and I lived in the burbs, so the only time I was able to go was when I went with my parents, but we managed to get there a couple times a month. It was literally its own world there, some neat fellows, some odd fellows, some poor fellows and some rich fellows, some old, some young, but for the majority it was good people. And I think it was one of the first smoke-free establishments in Minneapolis! (don't quote me on that, not 100% sure) Anyways, Just a great place with great people and great food @ a great price. It needs to be brought back, but I don't know if it would float... I mean... Mud Pie closed too... shortly after 9/11. Mud Pie was good, and I thought it would never close. Hard Times is a distant 2nd, and I think it attracts "posers"... I mean the die hards at the Riv never went to Hard Times... never. That is All. - eric, 06/11/2008
