Detail for Maria's Cafe : Restaurant, American / Latin

Three of my friends and I went to Maria’s Café for breakfast upon the recommendation of one of the members of our party. I was pleased to find that the restaurant offered “tropical” juices on the menu, so I ordered the Passion Fruit juice after asking a staff member whether the juice was made from pulp or poured from a pre-made bottle. When the drinks came to the table I found that the Passion Fruit juice was nothing more than a glorified glass of water - with a hint of passion fruit flavoring and a lot of sugar. After one sip I asked the waiter to take it back. Without saying a word he removed it from the table, and we continued with our meal (which was tasty in its own right). The time came for us to pay the bill, and we noticed that the Passion Fruit juice was still listed on the ticket. We questioned the waiter who said he would have to ask Maria if he could remove the juice from our bill. When she told him that he could not remove anything from our check, we asked to please speak with her. Maria – the owner and namesake of the restaurant – came to our table and very rudely told us that she has been to many restaurants and no one will ever remove an item from your bill just because you didn’t like it. Well I am sorry, Maria, but that is not true. And if this is the restaurant’s policy, the waiter should have warned us that we would still have to pay for it before he threw the whole glass away. Maria also said that if I had a problem with the way the juice tastes I should take it up with Goya, the juice manufacturer. Only after several minutes of arguing did Maria begrudgingly remove the item from the bill. I’m sorry to say that a $2.50 drink (out of a $40+ bill!) has lost Maria’s Cafe four customers. I would not recommend this restaurant simply because of the bad customer service - the bad customer service that starts from the top! - guti0036@umn.edu, 10/10/2005
