Detail for Khyber Pass Cafe : Restaurant, Continental

I had a horrible experience at this restaurant. We were charged $50 for two people. We ordered an appetizer, two juices, two dishes, two teas. They charge us $2 for a small thing of dipping sauce. They even charged $5.00 for juice because my husband had asked for a refill ($2.50/per refill). Their glasses are super tiny. I could drink my water in one gulp. The juice that he ordered was not fresh as he had expected, it was very stale and from a container. You can buy the entire bottle for 99cents at Holy Land. The pita bread was microwaved and soggy. The spinach was canned and tasted just horrible. The plates were also very small, so the dinner portions were small. The food was cold. We never got water refills. The food had no spices, very bland tasting. We had to ask for sugar with the iced tea and it took forever to get it. We got more hummus than bread for our appetizer. The tea was super sweet, it gave us a headache. The food does not taste very good at all. It also did not taste Afghani. I've had good Afghani food at Crescent Moon, this was just fast food for $50. I'm never going there again. What a rip off! - Nadya123, 06/29/2007
First the Khyber Pass Cafe is now at a new location: Khyber Pass Cafe 1571 Grand Ave St Paul, MN 55105-2229 Phone: 6516900505 Clearly the restaurant provides something that is lacking in the Twin Cities in most restaurant: local owners who have put their sweat and tears into establishing a comfortable place with original photographs as well as artwork. The fans and carpets from the ceiling are useful in reducing noise and maintaining a cool pleasant environment without exorbitant costs running A/C which is usually causes dining rooms to be frigid. The Khyber pass is comfortable and the food quite delicious. The pace of the meal is not fast food style and requires the diners to readjust a bit to remember that the meal is to be experienced and to include conversation with the owner, one's compatriots, etc. Clearly for the money this place provides a bargain of healthy home cooking Afghani meals. I have found my visits to this restaurant a starting point for many great conversations over wonderful food. - paul t, 09/04/2004
