Detail for Axel's River Grille : Restaurant, American
[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Since Axel's opened in late summer of 1996, Minnesotans have converged on the historic Minnesota River hamlet of Mendota for the thrill of experiencing a menu of rich depth and flavor. This out of the way establishment makes up for the drive into nowhere with an exquisite menu. Axel's pays tribute to the former greats-the Parker House, whose stood in its location before; Gannon's, the late, lamented St. Paul steak house; and the traditional supper clubs . With dark lighting, walls and booths; reproductions of famous art, Axel's is truly a man's restaurant. The menu features: porterhouse steak, rack of lamb, herb-crusted prime rib, liver steak with onions and bacon, garlic-roasted chicken, smoked barbecued ribs and classic martinis. Less-hearty eaters can graze among the seafood, salads and pastas. Among the best reasons to eat here are the buttery side dishes, such as mashed potatoes laced with caramelized onions. Given the group-sized portions of the self-proclaimed "legendary" onion rings and the bucket of peel-and-eat shrimp that would break the ice in any group, this is a good place to share with family or friends. - sys, 03/06/2001
Our group eats at Axel's once a month. We've found nothing that can surpass them. Don Peterson brokerdon@attbi.com - Don Peterson, 12/31/2002
FANTASTIC FARE, FABULOUS STAFF, JUST ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING DINING/DRINKING MATURE ATMOSPHERE. THE WAIT STAFF(SCOTT) WAS TRULY A PROFESSIONAL. ALLRIGHT,THAT'S ENOUGH. - DAN SCHMIDT, 08/19/2002
I have only eaten at Axel's once and truly enjoyed my dining experience. I felt the service and food was excellent. I have also had numerous co-workers rave about this place and I can see why. When we have visitors to our office from out of town, we always recommend this as one of the places they should go and since it's pretty close to our office in Mendota Heights, it makes it all the better. - Beth B., 07/03/2002
I belong to a dinner club. It was my turn to select a dinner club. I selected Axel's because I had been there before and it was very good. But to my dismay, our visit on Saturday was most unpleasant. The drinks were watered down. I didn't know if mine had alcohol in it or not. The french onion soup was not very good. When the main meal came, my vegetables were cold and my husbands steak was lukewarm. The salmon was very disappointing. My walleye was very good but again not very warm. The meal cost my husband and I $90.00. I mentioned the cold vegetables to the manager when she came to our table and she volunteered to have them warmed up for me but for $90.00 I expected them to come already hot and not have to be zapped in a microwave. Very disappointing. We rated it a 6 out of 10. Points being given for prompt seating, nice atmosphere and clean bathrooms. - Jan, 01/23/2002
Best ribs we've had in Mpls-St. Paul. Clam chowder is excellent. - Diane Johnson, 06/30/2001
