Detail for Wayne County Courthouse : Architecture
Built in 1897, this building is undergoing a $20 million restoration. The building is an architectural masterpiece. Occupying a whole block, it extends 255 feet along the front and back, and 175 feet on the sides. A massive granite curb about two feet high bounds the entire site. The ground floor and first story exterior walls are made of grey Vermont granite, laid in a rusticated pattern (the joints between the stones are deeply beveled and recessed). The next three floors and tower are clad in buff-colored sandstone. Among the most commanding details of the building are the two heroic quadrigae (four-horse chariots) above and flanking the Randolph portico and the four figures on the corners of the tower colonnade parapet. Frequently mistaken for bronze, these were actually fabricated of sheet copper, hammered, soldered and riveted over iron frameworks. - sys, 01/26/2002
