Saw Long John Baldry (the kind of rock and roll) play his best stuff here in 1987 or so. Great club, intimate atmosphere, wonderful memory. - Jonny, 07/24/2011
I loved this place ..used to go there and here the best blues memories.. - Vivian Eychner, 08/18/2011
Have not been to Detroit for many years. In the mid 70's a good friend of mine was dating a woman (now his wife) who worked at the Soup Kitchen. We made the drive from Toronto almost every weekend. We saw many great blues bands there. Was told that it was the oldest bar in the Motor City. What a shame! - anonymous, 05/18/2011
The SOUP KITCHEN SALOON was one of the finest bars in the city. It had a real earthy feel to it and if you looked closely you could spot the remnants of the original decor. It had a terrace on the second floor where I spent many a sunny day drinking a house concoction called the Metro Beach (named for the polluted fecal bath in Warren MI). Located close enough to Chene Park to catch a free
concert along with your irish coffee and apple strudle (last one I caught was Maze). A joint that was very well liked and is unfortunately sorely missed. P.S. The bar was taken by the City of Detroit under eminent domain for the construction of the casinos. This constr. will now take place in the city center and this land along w/ many other viable businesses and night spots have been closed for naught. Owners were paid fair market value for their property AFTER they were condemned... - anonymous, 06/06/2003
