Possibly closed after 15 years - call for details. - sys, 12/26/1999
Someone should correct Wikipedia. The Whale opened in 1971,when it started as a pub years before they had bands playing, not '81. Before that River road had SOP,Nickel Bag & Strawberry Alarm Clock. - Larry, 03/01/2008
I was at the 'Funeral For The Whale' Show. It is truly sad that such a great place would close. I know that it has been years now, but The Thirsty Whale was a Rock N Roll landmark. It's the kind of place I'll tell my son about someday... and sadly he won't understand. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. - hollywood154452@yahoo.com, 08/28/2003
The whale was one of the worst things they could have knocked down for a McDonalds! It was awesome, a truly significant landmark in a town not so significant for anything else. mwilliams357@juno.com - Marc Williams, 05/23/2002
I was one of many, who played at the Thirsty Whale, and have many fond memories of the friend's that I made, and especialy memorie's of a friend that I lost.I was the drummer in a band called FELONY,and along with my friend's and band member's,we were all there to rebuild after both flood's.I guess what I'm tring to say is alot of us grew up at the whale, and anybody who was a regular, and had half the fun that I did,has to miss those times in some way or another.Good Luck to all of the ex-whaler's out there. Great to see that fond memories were had at 'The Whale' We sure do miss everyone. Moved to Las Vegas in August and are just loving it. Ever get to this part of the country, send us an e-mail. Darlenedecanio@compuserve.com - Jim & Darlene Decanio, 01/23/2001
Even the Cops who worked the door at the Whale miss it. Terry, Ritch, Bill, myself and the other River Grove Police Officers who worked the door. Still fondley talk about the many fun nights we spent at the Whale. Most of us still live in River Grove. Hope to see a web site up soon showing the old landmark that used to stand at the corner of Grand and River Road. Sergeant Dennis Ryan,RGPD (RES) Retired. - grovers2@aol.com, 10/11/2000
