The museum's first location was in Evanston, founded in 1980 by businessman and US Ambassador-at-Large for Cultural Affairs, Daniel J. Terra. The mission of the museum is to acquire, exhibit, preserve, and explain works of American art to promote a greater comprehension and love of the country's rich and diverse heritage.
