Chicago's main downtown park, based on French park designs, is located between Lake Michigan and Michigan Avenue. The park's fill was created by the debris from the Great Fire of 1871. Plans to build commercial property in the park were thwarted through the efforts of Chicagoan A. Montgomery Ward. The lakefront remains a favorite area for sunbathers, walkers, rollerbladers, runners, and cyclists. - Alotta, 09/30/2003
