I am a teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School. I would like to thank you Dr. Burrough for opening my eyes to the reality that black people have made a contribution to society. When I was about 11 years old my friends and I would come to the museum and stare into the window. We stood in awe of the beauty and boldness of the pictures and artifacts inside. One sunday you came out and asked why did we come every sunday and stare. We explained that we did not have enough money to come in. You allowed us inside and personally gave us a tour. That was the begining of the first day of my black life. I suddenly awoke ot the reality that I was indeed a special person. I was a part of something special. I had not seen many blacks in charge in our community, or in the books I read in school. You showed me that we had made a contribution and we were smart, beautiful, and strong. Thank you for being there for a little black girl. - Genise Meekins, 02/03/2003
