Changes in Museum Hours and Suggested Admission Fees
As of July 1, 2004, the Art Institutes long day will move from Tuesday to Thursday, with Tuesday remaining our free day. Tuesday museum hours will now be 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (and will continue to be free, thanks to Ford Motor Companys generous support), and Thursday hours will be 10:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening has been our late night-coupled with our free admission day-since the late 1980s. For many years before that, it was Thursday. On Thursday evenings, we will follow our normal suggested admission policy as an extension of the daytime hours. The last Tuesday evening will be June 29, and the first Thursday evening on July 1. The Art Institute is one of two major museums in Chicago
that still have a suggested-admissions policy, that is, Pay what you wish but you must pay something. The Chicago Park District recently approved a raise in the Art Institutes suggested admission fees: from $10 to $12 for adults, and from $6 to $7 for children over 5, students, and seniors 65 years and up. This change also goes into effect July 1. Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, the Art Institutes research collections, will have new public hours beginning June 1, 2004. Effective June 1-July 1, 2004 inclusive, public hours will be: Tuesdays 12.30-7.45, Wednesdays 12.30-4.30, and Thursdays 12.30-4.30 (note that the Libraries will not be open July 1 evening as the Museum changes its late night from Tuesdays to Thursdays). The Libraries will close completely to outside readers July 2-August 3, 2004 inclusive for inventory. When the Libraries reopen August 4, 2004 permanent public hours will be: Wednesdays 12.30-4.30, Thursdays 12.30-7.45 (the new Museum late night), and Fridays 12.30-4.30. The Libraries are open to Museum members, students and faculty of the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and visiting
scholars and curators. The collections form a major resource on the history of art and architecture.
