Indian cuisine receives an upscale twist in this lushly decorated room complete with floor-to-ceiling burgundy velvet drapes, a humongous red silk light fixture that dominates the ceiling, and framed Buddhist sayings dotting the walls. A large, pleasant bar area greets diners. Appealing, spicy dishes dominate the menu, including phyllo triangles stuffed with lamb; and a red snapper fillet topped with finely cut vegetables, then wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed. Also outstanding is the Cornish game hen which is smoked in Darjeeling tea and placed on an aromatic bed of basmati rice and peas. Efficient service; recommended drink: the Silk Road martini. French cooking techniques and Asian flavorings make this Indian restaurant unique. Starters include chickpea-battered shrimp parkoras served with tamarind sauce, and soba noodle and beef salad in sweet-and-sour garlic-chili sauce. Entrees include Indian spice-rubbed lamb served atop a mushroom ragout and mint-chutneyed potatoes prepared Bombay-style. For dessert try the saffron-coconut cheesecake served with a compote of mint and tomato. Wine list includes global choices. Open for lunch
