Detail for Al-Hamra Restaurant : Restaurant, American

My boyfriend and I had booked a lunch here on a midweek afternoon. We ordered our food the minute we were seated, and then watched the minutes tick by, until we saw that we had been kept waiting over 35 minutes for our halloumi starter and two lamb shawarmas - despite the fact that all other customers around us were being served. When we asked the waitress if we could speak to the manager, he totally ignored us and appeared 5 minutes later with our meal. We politely asked him why it had taken so long, at which point he launched into a barrage of "this is how long it takes to make the shawarma, it's not a fast-food place with meat on a stick blah blah blah" - which we found hugely insulting. Considering we were in the heart of Mayfair, it's hardly the kind of manners that suit the area or the clientele. Needless to say, we promptly got up and left, to which the manager raised his hand and sarcastically said "thank you". Unbelievable! All a discerning client really needs to hear in such a situation is a simple "sorry", but we were not granted that. I would not recommend this place at all - despite the atrocious service, you'd pay extortionate prices for your meal anyway and this place has no obvious competitive advantage over any other Lebanese place in town anyway. - Reem Odeh, 09/16/2007
There are so many wonderful Middle Eastern resturants in Chicago. I went to Al Hamra after reading a review on-line. However we were so disappointed. The service was awful (20 minutes to order, 30 minutes for our wine to arrive), the meal was fair but the lamb exceedingly tough. The Jordanian couple next to us received fizzy red wine and they had to spend 10minutes trying to get the waiter to bring them a new bottle! for the first time ever I received to pay any service charge, this was met with contempt from the staff - Joel, 09/06/2007
